Owls Earn Top Seed in American Championship

HOUSTON – The No. 1-seeded Rice men's tennis team will face No. 9-seeded Tulane in the quarterfinals of the American Conference Championship in Tulsa, Oklahoma. The teams will meet at 10 a.m. CT on Friday, April 17.
The Owls enter the tournament as the top seed with a 13-7 overall record and a perfect 8-0 mark against conference opponents this season.
The reigning conference champions are also well represented in the ITA rankings. Rice is ranked No. 49 as a team. In doubles, Petro Kuzmenok and Santiago Navarro are ranked No. 57, while Kuzmenok is No. 53 in singles.
Rice received multiple conference's seasonal honors, earning five total selections. Kuzmenok accounted for three, including two weekly honors and Player of the Month in October. Kabeer Kapasi and Navarro also earned weekly honors.
In the fall, Navarro and Kuzmenok won the American doubles championship and advanced to the NCAA Championship.
To open the spring season, the Owls defeated Oregon 4-3 at ITA Kickoff Weekend.
Rice will look to become just the third American Conference men's program to win back-to-back conference titles.
