NEW ORLEANS – The No. 56 Rice women's tennis team fell 4-1 to No. 38 Charlotte on Saturday.
The Owls (7-5) dropped their first-ever match to the 49ers after winning the previous five meetings between the programs.
Charlotte claimed the early advantage by securing the doubles point. Uma Bakaityte and Daniela Chica fell to Prisca Abbas and Lucia Aranda, 6-4. The 49ers clinched the point when Andrea Chacon and Shona Nakano defeated Ema Mravcova and Divna Ratkovic, 6-3.
When doubles play was halted, Darya Schwartzman and Fernanda Martinez were tied 5-5 with Sara Suchankova and Ni Xi on court one.
Mravcova evened the match for Rice with the first singles win, defeating Yelzave Chainykova, 6-1, 6-2.
Charlotte regained the lead and never trailed again. Nakano defeated Bakatityte, 6-1, 6-2, on court three, followed by Abbas topping Martinez, 6-3, 6-2. Aranda sealed the match for the 49ers with a 7-5, 6-1 win over Francesca Maguina on court four.
On the remaining courts, Schwartzman led 6-3, 3-2 on court one, while Ratkovic trailed 6-4, 2-2 in the second set when play was halted.
The Owls will face Tulane on Sunday at 11 a.m. and will be streamed on ESPN+.
