Women's Tennis Faces Ranked Virgina to Open ITA Kickoff Weekend

HOUSTON – The Rice women's tennis team will compete in the ITA Kickoff Weekend in Charlottesville, Va., this weekend.
Originally scheduled to begin on Saturday, the Owls' opening match was moved to Friday due to inclement weather. Rice will face host No. 14 Virginia at 2 p.m. Friday and will take on either No. 20 USC or Wisconsin on Saturday.
Rice will be playing for a spot in the NCAA Indoor National Championship, hosted by Northwestern in Evanston, Ill., on Feb. 10. The ITA Kickoff Weekend features a 56-team field, with 14 teams advancing to the national championship. Each host site includes a four-team bracket, with one team earning advancement.
Friday's match marks the first meeting between Rice and Virginia. The Owls' lone meeting with USC resulted in a 4-2 loss in 2017, while Wisconsin defeated Rice 7-0 in 2009.
Rice enters the weekend with a 2-0 record after opening the season with a 7-0 win over Lamar and a 4-3 victory against Florida Atlantic.
