Owls Secure First Win of 2026

HOUSTON – The Rice women's tennis team picked up its first win of the 2026 season with a 7-0 victory over Lamar on Sunday.
The Owls opened the match by sweeping doubles to claim the opening point. Fernanda Martinez and Francesca Maguina set the tone with a 6-0 win over Asta Miettinen and Savannah Bijlsma. Anushka Ashar and Ema Mravcova followed with a 6-1 victory against Lera Zaginayko and Martina Alcaino. On court one, Uma Bakaityte and Nithesa Selvaraj were leading 4-1 over Arina Gudovskaya and Luana Paiva when doubles play was halted.
Rice carried the momentum into singles play, where Martinez wasted little time with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Alcaino. Divna Ratkovic added a 6-2, 6-0 victory on court two, before Maguina clinched the match with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Paiva.
Play continued beyond the clinch as Bakaityte defeated Gudovskaya, 6-3, 6-2, and Mravcova earned a 6-3, 6-1 win over Bijlsma on court six. Selvaraj closed out the sweep with a 6-2, 6-3 victory.
Rice will host Florida Atlantic on Monday, Jan. 19, at 11 a.m. for its first conference match of the season.
