Rice Completes Opening Weekend Sweep

HOUSTON — The Rice women's tennis team secured its second straight win with a 4-3 victory over Florida Atlantic on Monday.
Rice dropped its first doubles point of the season as FAU's Lara Smejkal and Malwina Rowinska defeated Uma Bakaityte and Nithesa Selvaraj on court one. On court two, Panna Bartha and Katrin Patkova topped Fernanda Martinez and Francesca Maguina, 6-4. Anushka Ashar and Ema Mravcova were trailing 6-4 against Malika Amigraliyeva and Alexia Patru when FAU clinched the doubles point.
In singles play, Darya Schwartzman earned the first point for Rice with a 6-1, 6-3 win over Smejkal. Maguina fell to Amigraliyeva, 6-3, 6-1, on court four before Divna Ratkovic evened the match with a 6-1, 6-1 victory against Bartha. Martinez secured Rice's third singles point with a 6-4, 6-4 win over Patru.
On court five, FAU's Patkova defeated Selvaraj, 6-2, 7-6, setting up a deciding match. Bakaityte clinched the win for the Owls with a third-set tiebreak victory. After dropping the first set, 6-3, she broke a 5-5 tie in the second to win, 7-5, and came back from a 3-1 deficit to take the tiebreaker 7-5 and allow Rice to improve to 2-0 overall and 1-0 in the American Conference.
Rice will travel to Charlottesville, Va., for ITA Kickoff Weekend, where it will face Virginia on Jan. 24.
