Owls Fall to No. 14 Virginia at ITA Kickoff Weekend

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Rice women's tennis team fell 0-4 to No. 14 Virginia on Friday at the ITA Kickoff Weekend.
Virginia jumped out to an early advantage in doubles. Melodie Collard and Vivian Yang opened with a 6-0 win over Darya Schwartzman and Uma Bakaityte, and Annabelle Xu and Martina Genis Salas clinched the doubles point with a 6-2 victory against Fernanda Martinez and Francesca Maguina. The third doubles match between Ema Mravcova and Daniela Chica and Meggie Navarro and Isabelle Lacy was tied 4-4 when play was halted.
The Cavaliers carried their momentum into singles play. Collard earned the first singles point with a 6-1, 6-4 win over Nithesa Selvaraj. Xu followed with a 7-6, 6-2 victory against Bakaityte before Genis Salas secured the match with a 6-2, 7-5 win over Divna Ratkovic.
Several singles matches were left unfinished after the match was decided. On court one, Schwartzman and Yang were in the third set at 3-3 after splitting the first two sets. Maguina trailed 7-6, 4-4 on court four, while Martinez was in the third set at 1-3 after dropping the first set and winning the second against Blair Gill.
Saturday's consolation match was canceled due to predicted inclement weather.
The Owls return to action Friday, Jan. 30, when they travel to Denton, Texas, to face North Texas at noon.
