College Baseball Foundation honors 1-hitter vs. Charlotte
Rice junior pitcher Davion Hickson has been named the College Baseball Foundation's Pitcher of the Week for his one-hit shutout against Charlotte at Reckling Park on May 2.
Hickson made his first career win as a starter a memorable one, allowing only a one-out soft single to left in the third inning against the 49ers while walking three and hitting one batter on his way to a 2-0 win. He finished with nine strikeouts and allowed only one runner to reach second base in the game, setting the stage for Rice to take the series against Charlotte for the first time since 2017.
Hickson and Charlotte ace Blake Gillespie each raced through their opposing lineup, completing the first four innings in an hour before the game was delayed for 50 minutes at the start of the fifth inning. Hickson picked up where he left off once the game resumed, facing two hitters over the minimum and retiring the final seven in order.
The last Owl to throw a one-hit shutout was Matthew Reckling, who defeated East Carolina 2-0 on April 20, 2012. It was the first shutout of Charlotte in the 49ers' last 58 games.
In two starts since he returned to the rotation vs. UAB on April 25, Hickson is 1-1 with a 1.62 ERA (3 ER in 16.2 IP) while allowing just four hits and striking out 19. Ironically, he was the losing pitcher to last week's CBF pitching honoree in his return to the starting rotation as the Blazers' Colin Daniel shut out the Owls 3-0.
Hickson and the Owls are slated to host Prairie View A&M on Wednesday at 6:30 and then wrap up their 2025 AAC home schedule this weekend with three games against Wichita State, beginning at 6:30 on Friday.
