COLLEGE STATION – The Rice men's track and field team had one athlete punch their ticket to the NCAA Championships, with Jack Greaves doing so in the javelin at the NCAA West Prelims on Wednesday afternoon in College Station.
Greaves continues his stellar redshirt-freshman campaign, finishing seventh in the javelin with a personal best throw of 72.17m to qualify for the NCAA Championship meet in Eugene, Oregon. The throw moves him up to third all-time at Rice.
Augustus Henry and Aryan Padaruth closed out their seasons with Henry finishing 20th with a throw of 65.90m, while Padaruth was 24th with a throw of 65.20m, both in the javelin.
Cal Abdulky closed his outdoor career finishing 34th in the hammer throw with a throw of 61.14m, his third consecutive year qualifying for the NCAA West Prelims for the event.
Day One Reaction - Head Coach Jon Warren
"It was all throwing for us today. The goal was to get someone to qualify for the national meet, and Jack stepped up and threw a tremendous personal best mark to advance. Everyone else was very solid and also had very good throws. Augustus and Aryan both threw 65-plus meters, and Cal had a strong close to his outdoor career. Getting through to the national meet is a phenomenal achievement. This is one of the tougher nationals to make in college sports. Jack making it as a red-shirt freshman is really impressive and quite a feat. We look to add another to Eugene on Friday with Gus Gannon in the 3000m steeplechase and Juan Marais in the discus."
