All sprints, mid-distance and hurdle events will have prelims and finals. The long-distance events will be run as finals. Field events (excluding high jump and pole vault) will have trials with the top nine advancing to the finals.
Gus Gannon broke a 37-year school record in the Steeplechase at the Bryan Clay Invite, doing so with a time of 8:43.02. The previous record set by Alfredo Gomez in 1988 was 8:46.37. Gannon is seeded with the best time in the AAC. Andrew Murray (8:56.57) also cracked the top 10 list in the event and enters the meet seeded fourth.
Cal Abdulky returns looking to defend his hammer throw title from last season. Entering the meet, Abdulky is seeded second in the event, with Sultan Bakare (sixth) and Daniel Sowell (eighth) also seeded.
The Owls have a trio currently sitting 2-3-4 in the javelin, with last year's runner-up Aryan Padaruth leading the pack. Jack Greaves enters with a 70-plus-meter mark while Augustus Henry is seeded fourth with a mark of 67 meters.
In the 1500m, Elliot Metcalf (fourth), Gannon (fifth) and Jackson Moran (sixth) all enter as top seeds.
Several Rice freshmen rank within the top marks not only in the conference, but in the nation. Juan Marais currently ranks second in the AAC, 15th in the NCAA West and 28th in the NCAA in the discus. After his first collegiate throws last time out for the Owls, redshirt-freshman Jack Greaves surpassed the 70-meter mark in javelin to rank third in the AAC, 11th in the NCAA West and 22nd in the NCAA.
Other freshmen ranking in the top 10 in the conference are William Thames (seventh), Evan Ringwald (eighth), and Marcus Gaitan (10th), all in the 800m, William Hagemeier (sixth, pole vault), and Daniel Sowell (eighth in hammer throw and 10th in shot put).
The Owls have finished third at the conference outdoor meet in each of the last three seasons (2022-24), surpassing 100 points in each meet. This is best streak of scoring at the conference meet since Rice surpassed the 100-point mark in eight consecutive meets from 2004-11.
