Women's Tennis Earns Top-50 Win, Handles Wichita State, 4-0

HOUSTON — The 48th-ranked Rice Owls women's tennis team took down the 49th-ranked Wichita State Shockers on Tuesday at the George R. Brown Tennis Center to improve to 15-5 on the year. The Shockers fell to 12-8 on the season with the loss.
Rice has now won 10 of its last 11 matches and improves to 6-1 against ranked squads in that stretch.
In doubles action, Divna Ratkovic and Anushka Ashar made quick work of their opponents at the third line, earning a quick 6-0 win. At the second line, Darya Schwartzman and Nithesa Selvaraj were pushed to the brink and faced a deficit as large at 1-5, but proceeded to win the next six-straight games to come back and take the second court with a 7-5 win, and clinch the doubles point. Saara Orav and Francesca Maguina were up 5-4 on the first line when doubles was called.
In singles action, Allison Zipoli crossed the finish line first with a 6-0, 6-2, win at the fifth line to earn Rice a 2-0 lead in the match. Selvaraj was not far behind her, taking both of her sets by a 6-3 score to put the Owls ahead 3-0. Maguina would earn Rice's final point of the day in a three set victory (6-0, 5-7, 6-1), setting 4-0 as the final for the match.
The Owls won all of the first sets on the day and had advantages on all but one court when the match was called.
Rice will conclude the regular season with senior day on Saturday, April 12, against Middle Tennessee. First serve is set for 2 p.m.
