Owls Claim 25th Rice Invitational Team Title on Senior Day

HOUSTON — The 69th-ranked Rice Owls men's tennis team fell 4-3 to the UTSA Roadrunners on Sunday afternoon at the George R. Brown Tennis Center. Rice falls to 12-9 while UTSA improves to 8-10. The match was Rice's designated Senior Day match, as well as the finale of the Ralph O'Connor Rice Invitational. With the final result, the Owls claim its 25th team title in the Rice Invitational.
Action began with the doubles portion of the match, where UTSA's duo on the third court took the first match with a 6-4 result. Petro Kuzmenok and Santiago Navarro followed that with a 6-4 win of their own on the first line, leaving court two as the decided for doubles. UTSA would take the court with a 6-4 score.
Between the doubles and singles portion of the match, where seniors Arthus de la Bassetiere, Eduardo Morais, and Emir Sendogan were honored for their contributions to the program.
In singles, UTSA built as much as a 3-0 lead, starting with a 6-3, 6-0 victory for the Roadrunners at the first line, followed by a 6-3, 6-4 win at the fourth line. Sendogan got the Owls on the board with a 6-4, 6-1 victory at the fifth line, and Navarro helped the Owls tighten the gap with a 7-6 (5), 6-3 win at the third line, setting the score at 3-2. The Roadrunners would secure its fourth point of the match with a win at the second court, a 7-6 (7), 6-4 win. Rice would close the match with a win at the sixth line by a score of 7-6 (10), 5-7, 3-2 (2)*.
Rice will conclude the regular season on the road against the UAB Blazers. First serve is set for Sunday, April 13, at 2 p.m.
