HOUSTON - The 69th-ranked Rice Owls mens tennis team will host the 66th-annual Rice Invitational, and the sixth to be dubbed the Ralph O'Connor Rice Invitational, this weekend, beginning on Friday, April 4. The Owls will host conference foes Charlotte and UTSA for the tournament.
The Rice Invitational celebrates its 66th year and the sixth installment as the Ralph O'Connor Rice Invitational, honoring the man who meant so much to Rice University in general and Rice Tennis specifically since he first came to Houston in the early 1950s.
Rice comes into the weekend with an 11-8 overall record, earning a victory last week over the Tulane Green Wave in a shortened indoor match from the JCC. Charlotte arrives to South Main with a 9-9 record, falling in its previous two matches to ranked conference opponents in South Florida and Florida Atlantic. UTSA brings a 7-9 record to South Main, most recently defeating Abilene Christian in San Antonio.
Rice is 5-2 all-time against the 49ers, but the two Charlotte victories came in 2022, when the 49ers defeated Rice for the first time even at home in March before knocking the Owls out of the Conference USA tournament in Norfolk, Va., a month later.
Rice is 21-6 all-time against UTSA and is currently riding a three-match winning streak over the Roadrunners. The Roadrunners lone wins in the last 10 years both came in 2021, when UTSA took down Rice both at home and in San Antonio.
