No. 48 Rice Takes Down No. 71 UTSA, 4-2, on Saturday Afternoon

SAN ANTONIO, Texas - After dropping the doubles point to the 71st-ranked UTSA Roadrunners, the 48th-ranked Rice Owls women's tennis team powered through to knock off the Roadrunners, 4-2, on Saturday afternoon at the UTSA Tennis Center. Rice improves to 9-4 while the Roadrunners fall only the second time this season, falling to 14-2.
In doubles, the 33rd-ranked tandem of Darya Schwartzman and Fernanda Martinez took care of business at the first court, earning a 6-2 victory. Allison Zipoli and Divna Raktovic fell 6-4 at the third court, leaving it up to the second court for both sides. 80th-ranked Saara Orav and Francesca Maguina fell 6-4, earning UTSA the doubles point.
In singles, Schwartzman tied the match with a quick 6-2, 6-3 victory at the first line. Martinez gave Rice the lead in the match with a 6-1, 6-2 victory at the sixth line, but the Roadrunners would tie the match at 2-2 with a 6-2, 6-1 victory at the fourth line. Rice would reclaim the lead with Nithesa Selvaraj's victory at the fifth court, 6-1, 6-2, and Maguina would clinch the match with a 6-2, 7-5 victory at the third line, keeping Rice's undefeated streak against UTSA. Ratkovic was the only player with an incomplete match, falling in her first set, 4-6, but lea dinging in her second, 3-2, when the match was called.
Rice returns home on Monday afternoon to take on the Princeton Tigers. First serve from the George R. Brown Tennis Center is scheduled for 1 p.m.
