
Owls Have Great Outdoor Season Debut at UH

HOUSTON – The Rice men's track and field team opened the 2025 outdoor season with great performances all throughout the track at the Kirk Baptiste Spring Break Invite at the University of Houston Thursday afternoon.
Elliot Metcalf claimed the event title in the 1500m, with freshman Marcus Gaitan finishing right behind in second.
William Thames had a great showing with a second-place finish in the 800m.
In the hammer throw, Cal Abdulky grabbed the title with a throw of 61 meters. Daniel Sowell and Sultan Bakare both climbed into the top 10 for the event with 53m-plus throws.
Bakare also moved into ninth all-time in the shot put with a throw of 17.05m.
Over in the discus, Juan Marais finished second in his debut with a distance of 55.70m, ranking sixth all-time at Rice.
