
Owls Dominate in Win over UAB

HOUSTON – The Rice women's basketball team used a daunting defensive presence to overwhelm UAB 73-48 Tuesday night at Tudor Fieldhouse. With the win, Rice evens its record at 14-14 (7-9 AAC) while UAB falls to 15-13 (6-10 AAC).
Victoria Flores led the Owls with 23 points, six rebounds, six assists, a steal and a block, while Dominique Ennis rounded out the Rice double-digit scorers with 10 points, 10 rebounds and two blocks.
As a team, Rice shot 26-of-70 (37.1%) from the floor and 5-of-21 (23.8%) from three-point range. The Owls added a 16-of-19 (84.2%) showing from the free throw line. Rice out-rebounded UAB 62-27 in the game.

HOW IT HAPPENED
First Quarter
A Blazer triple opened the game before Flores and Sussy Ngulefac combined for a quick 6-0 run to give Rice the lead. Leading by two, back-to-back Ngulefac scores gave the Owls a six-point lead. Rice led 13-11 at the end of the first.
Second Quarter
Dominique Ennis drilled a triple to open the second quarter, with UAB countering with a quick score. Leading by three, a pair of Hayes free throws kickstarted a 12-0 run with Hailey Adams, Emily Klaczek and Malia Fisher also contributing, as the Owls took a 28-13 lead. After extending the lead further, Flores' last-second shot closed the half for Rice with the Owls in front 35-16.
Third Quarter
A quick 6-0 UAB lead cut into the deficit before Aniah Alexis snapped the run. After the Blazers got within 10 points, Ennis hit a triple, with Fisher following with a steal and score as the Owls took a 42-27 lead. Flores added another Rice three to continue the run, and later hit another as the Owls led 50-31 at the end of the third.
Fourth Quarter
Ennis netted back-to-back scores before Flores and Klaczek added a pair of baskets to give Rice an 8-0 run to open the fourth. After trading scores, Klaczek drained a three as the Owls took a 27-point lead. Free throws from Pace Rickard and Maya Bokunewicz, followed by another Alexis basket, rounded out the game's scoring as Rice went on to win 73-48.
