Swim posts two second place finishes in relay events
DALLAS, Texas - Rice swimming and diving finished day one of the American Athletic Conference Swimming and Diving Championship in third place overall, with two podium finishes in the three events on the day.
"Solid and safe first night!" said head coach Seth Huston. "Our medley relay put together 4 very good swims. Really awesome lead off for Abi King, going 24.9."
The evening began with the 200 Yard Medley Relay, where the quartet of Abigail King, Siiri Einio, Arielle Hayon, and Mimi Filkin earned Rice 56 points and a spot on the first podium, finishing in second place, less than two seconds behind Florida International.
"Our divers and Catherine Eland did what they needed to do in the Team Diving event and got us on the board. Tomorrow Rylee and Megan can go after their full list on 1 meter."
The team diving was the first time Rice took place in a diving event in a conference championship since the Southwestern Conference days, with the Owls divers of Rylee Coyne, Megan Phillip, and Catherine Eland, competing in her second diving event ever, earned a total score of 175.75 to earn 48 more points for the Owls.
"Our 800 free relay was good. I think we left a little in the tank, but we didn't do anything stupid. We put 4 disciplined swimmers on that relay, including two freshmen and I am pleased with our performance."
The final event of the day saw the quartet of Ava Portello, Reese Cole, Ava Hamblett, and Kane finish the 800 Yard Freestyle Relay with a time of 7:12.52, less than two seconds shy of top-finisher Tulane. The second place finish earned Rice 56 more points, to saddle the Owls at third place with 160 total points at the end of the first day.
Below is the current breakdown of the standings after day one:
Rice will return to action on Friday morning for preliminaries before competing in finals during the evening.
