19-game stretch in Houston opens on Tuesday
Ponce, Puerto Rico: Five Virginia pitchers combined to hold Rice to three hits as the Cavilers took a 7-0 decision in the final game of the first Puerto Rico Baseball Challenge at Francisco Montaner Stadium on Sunday.
The Details: J.D. McCracken opened the game for the Owls with a scoreless first inning, but reached his pitch count in the second after Virginia scored a pair of runs. Reed Gallant came on in relief with runners at the corners and none out. A pair of ground outs did not yield another run, but Virginia scored its third run on an errant throw on a stolen base before Gallant ended the frame with a strikeout. The fifth-year senior then retired the second-ranked Cavilers in order over the next two innings in his longest outing since he went 3.2 innings at UTSA in 2021. Trey Duffield collected two of the Owls' three hits, including a leadoff double in the third and a leadoff single in the eighth.
Up Next: Rice returns to Houston on Monday night and is scheduled to open the 2025 home schedule on Tuesday at 6:30 by hosting Sam Houston, the first of 19 consecutive games in Houston that features weekend series at Reckling Park vs. USC (February 21-23), Yale (March 7-9) and HCU (March 14-16) as well as three games at the 2025 Astros Foundation Classic against Mississippi State (February 28), defending CWS champion Tennessee (March 1), and 2024 CWS finalist Texas A&M (March 2).
