
Owls Down Morgan State on Thanksgiving

SAN JUAN – The Rice women's basketball team took control early and never looked back en route to a 75-44 win over Morgan State on Thanksgiving Day at the Discover Puerto Rico Shootout. Rice wins its third straight to move to 5-2 while the Bears fall to 1-7.
Hailey Adams led the way with 13 points, 11 rebounds, four blocks and three assists. Aniah Alexis, Myah Hazelton and Jordin Blackmon all added nine points each.
As a team, Rice shot 26-of-63 (41.3%) from the floor and 7-of-26 (26.9%) from three-point range. The Owls were 16-of-18 (88.9%) from the free throw line. Rice forced 27 Bear turnovers, scoring 33 points off those turnovers.
HOW IT HAPPENED
First Quarter
Morgan State opened the scoring before a Shelby Hayes' layup paired with a Victoria Flores three-pointer gave Rice the lead. Leading by six, Hazelton extended the lead with a layup. Back-to-back layups from Hazelton and Adams later pushed the lead to 15 points, with the Owls eventually ending the first with an 18-5 lead.
Second Quarter
The Bears pulled within 10 to start the second, with Hazelton responding with an and-one conversion. With the lead cut to seven, Ennis drilled a pair of triples, with an Adams layup following as Rice took a 12-point lead. Up 10, a Mylee Guinn three followed by a four-point play by Flores extended the advantage to 17 points. Rice led 38-21 at halftime.
Third Quarter
The Bears cut the deficit to 11 points before Hayes got the Owls back on the board with a layup. Leading by 10, Louann Battiston's free throws sparked a quick 9-0 run with Blackmon and Guinn adding scores as Rice went up 51-32. The Owls led 56-39 at the end of the third.
Fourth Quarter
Blackmon and Adams opened the fourth-quarter scoring, with Hazelton later adding a layup to give the Owls a 23-point lead. After a Morgan State score, Jill Twiehaus added a pair of baskets to extend Rice's lead. An Alexis three-pointer and Twiehaus layup closed the Rice scoring for the 30-point victory.
Quick Notes
Adams recorded her second double-double of the season and fifth of her career.
Adams also tied a career high with four blocks.
Guinn made her first collegiate three-pointer.
This was the first meeting between the two schools.
