
Owls Fall Just Short to UCF in Puerto Rico

SAN JUAN – The Rice women's basketball team fell just short to UCF 57-56 Friday night in the final game of the Discover Puerto Rico Shootout, where the Owls finish with a 2-1 mark. Rice falls to 5-3 on the season, while the Knights move to 6-2.
Shelby Hayes led the Owls with 17 points, six rebounds, a block and a steal, while Dominique Ennis added 14 points, four rebounds and three steals.
As a team, Rice shot 20-of-63 (31.7%) from the floor and 4-of-21 (19%) from three-point range. The Owls added a 12-of-13 (92.3%) mark from the free throw line.
HOW IT HAPPENED
First Quarter
UCF opened the game's scoring with a three-pointer, before Aniah Alexis responded with a three of her own. Leading by a point, back-to-back Alexis and Adams scores gave Rice a 10-4 lead. After the Knights tied the game, Myah Hazelton gave Rice a 12-10 lead at the end of the first with a layup.
Second Quarter
A pair of Louann Battiston free throws got the second quarter started. A quick run gave the Knights a 19-14 advantage before Alexis snapped the scoring. Down seven, back-to-back Hayes layups brought Rice within three. UCF held a 26-22 lead at the half.
Third Quarter
Adams brought Rice within two to open the third, with UCF responding with consecutive scores. Trailing by eight, a Hayes layup followed by an Ennis three made it 38-35 with under three to go in the quarter. Rice trailed 46-42 at the end of the third.
Fourth Quarter
After a Knight score, Hayes and Victoria Flores made back-to-back baskets to cut the deficit to two. Down four, Ennis drilled a three and Flores later added a score as Rice retook the lead. UCF responded by grabbing a four-point lead, but Hayes hit a three-pointer to make it a one-point game with 13 seconds to go. After forcing a turnover on the other end, Ennis' three at the buzzer fell just short as the Knights held on to win.

Hayes' three was the first of her career.
