
Chica sees success in day one of the ITA Texas Regional

FORT WORTH — Rice's Daniela Chica saw success in Day One of the ITA Texas Regional in Fort Worth, Texas, at TCU.
Chica pulled off a major upset in the Round of 32, defeating top-seeded Jemma Cave of Stephen F. Austin in a three-set battle, 5-7, 6-4, 7-6 (10-8). Earlier in the day, she opened with a dominant 6-1, 6-1 win. She will face Gabriela Cortes of the University of Houston on Friday. Match time is to be determined.
Ema Mravcova added a first-round win for the Owls, defeating Diana Kaibara of UT Arlington 6-3, 6-1, before falling to No. 6 seed Elena Mireles of SMU, 3-6, 4-6.
Valentina Ponce also claimed an opening win, defeating Vanja Cado of UTA 4-6, 6-0, 6-3. She was later eliminated by No. 9 seed Anna Perelman of Texas A&M, 1-6, 4-6.
Francesca Maguina and Nithesa Selvaraj will open doubles action at 8 a.m. against UTSA's Celine Absawi and Aoka Nagasawa. Mravcova and Chica follow at 8:45 a.m. against Alexandra Mille and Luciana Paez of Incarnate Word.
Darya Schwartzman and Uma Bakaityte, as well as Ratkovic and Ashar, received first-round byes and will begin play at 9:30 a.m. and 10:15 a.m., respectively. Their opponents have yet to be announced.
