
Rice Drops First AAC Contest at North Texas

DENTON, Texas – North Texas shot 55.1% from the floor and 55.0% from three as Rice fell to the Mean Green, 81-59, Wednesday night from the Super Pit.
The Story
North Texas came out shooting, making its first five shots of the game to take a 12-5 lead. But Rice hung right with them, as layups by Andrew Akuchie and Kellen Amos cut it to three. The teams then went back-and-forth. With UNT holding an 18-14 lead, Denver Anglin made a layup and Jacob Dar knocked down his second three of the game to give Rice its first lead, 19-18, with 9:27 to play in the half. The Mean Green scored eight of the next 10 points before Amos made a pair of free throws to cut the lead to 26-24. But a three-point play by Wright sent North Texas on a 10-0 run. Andrew Akuchie made two free throws, and the teams traded baskets. However, UNT scored the final four points of the half as Rice went into the break trailing, 42-28.
Broadnax started the second half with a jumper, but North Texas scored six straight points. Caden Powell scored four straight for the Owls, but Johnathan Massie hit consecutive threes to give North Texas a 56-34 advantage. Rice got no closer than 18 points the rest of the way.

Rice was held to 37.7% (20-of-53) from the field, and 31.6% (6-of-19) from three. North Texas connected on 55.1% (27-of-49) from the floor, 55.0% (11-of-20) from three, and 94.1% (16-of-17) from the free throw line. Rice was also outrebounded, 31-to-29.
