
Rice Drops Tough Decision to South Florida, 69-64

TAMPA, Fla. – South Florida used a 21-2 run over the end of the first half and beginning of the second, as Rice dropped a 69-64 decision, Tuesday night from the Yuengling Center.
The Story
Rice came out strong, jumping out to an 11-3 lead through the first three minutes. But an 8-0 USF run over the next three minutes tied the game before an Alem Huseinovic three-pointer ended the run. Andrew Akuchie made one-of-two free throws, and the team traded baskets. Jayden Reid brought the Bulls within one on a three. However, Denver Anglin answered with a three of his own, as the Owls went on a 15-2 run to take its largest lead of the game, 32-18, with 2:12 to play. But South Florida scored the final seven points of the half, as Rice went into halftime with a 32-25 lead.
Rice turned the ball over on three of its first five possessions as South Florida opened the second half on a 14-2 run to take its first lead of the game, 39-34. Trae Broadnax made two straight baskets to get the Owls within one. After USF scored three straight, Emory Lanier hit a three. The teams then traded baskets. But the Bulls made five of their next nine shots, taking its largest lead of the game at 61-49. But, Rice wouldn't go away. After trading baskets, Anglin scored five points in a 7-0 run to make it a five-point game with 2:52 to play. Brandon Stroud made one-of-two free throws, and Anglin made a pair. Kobe Knox made two, and Anglin hit his fourth three to make it a one-possession game with four seconds remaining. But Kasen Jennings made two free throws to clinch the game for the Bulls.

Rice was held to 40.0% (22-of-55) from the field, and 30.8% (8-of-26) from three. South Florida shot 40.0% (24-of-60) from the floor, but just 28.6% (6-of-21) from three. Rice won the rebounding battle, 41-to-37, but USF scored 26 points off of 19 Rice turnovers.
