Women's Tennis Overcomes Mother Nature, Takes Down UIW 7-0

HOUSTON - Several rain delays and a venue change could not stop Rice from moving to 3-0 on the season, taking down the Incarnate Word Cardinals on Saturday.
After multiple rain delays, action finally began at 3:50 PM. Rice tandem Nithesa Selvaraj and Divna Ratkovic were able to claim the first doubles victory with a 6-2 decision at the No. 2 position. Not long after, Fernanda Martinez and Darya Schwartzman clinched the doubles point for Rice with a 6-2 victory of their own at the No. 1 position, moving the match over to singles action.
Just as singles were beginning, another light rain shower came through South Main, forcing yet another delay in the match. This time, the rain became too much, forcing the teams to move the match to the Evelyn Rubenstein JCC.
In the singles matches, Ratkovic claimed the first victory and Rice's second point with a 6-1, 6-0 victory at court two. Schwartzman was not far behind, coming up with a 6-3, 6-0 victory to set Rice up closer to clinching the match. In the end, it was Martinez who came up with her first collegiate clinching moment, taking down her opponent 6-1, 6-1, to clinch the match for Rice.
Singles continued for a few more moments, with Selvaraj taking Rice's fifth point at 6-1, 6-3. Francesca Maguina claimed a point at the No. 5 position with a 6-2, 6-2 victory, and Allison Zipoli closed out the night with a 6-0, 6-2 victory at court four.
The women's tennis team will return to action on Friday, January 31, when the team hosts the Arizona Wildcats.
