Shooting Woes Sink Rice against Tulane
1/25/2025 5:36:00 PM | Men's Basketball
HOUSTON – Rice was held to a season-low 28.1% from the floor and 25.6% from three, as the Owls fell Saturday afternoon to Tulane, 82-71, from Tudor Fieldhouse.
The Story
Rice struggled to start the game, missing 10-of-its first 14 shots, including its first nine threes. With the Owls leading 9-7, they missed six straight shots as Tulane went on an 11-0 run to take its largest lead of the half, 18-9, with 9:35 to play, before Denver Anglin hit a three. Play went back-and-forth over the next 2:30. However, Rice began to get in a groove. After Jacob Dar made two free throws, Emory Lanier and Anglin hit back-to-back threes as Rice went on an 8-0 run to cut the deficit to one. Gregg Glenn III hit a jumper, but Anglin hit his fourth three of the half and Dar made two free throws to give Rice a 30-28 lead with 3:56 remaining. Tulane scored six of the next nine points, but Aaron Powell scored four straight points before the Green Wave closed the half with a bucket, as Rice went into the break with a 37-36 lead.
Rice started the second half the same way as the first, missing nine of its first 10 shots, allowing Tulane to extend its lead to 49-41. Anglin hit a three, and Trae Broadnax made two free throws. But the Green Wave went on a 22-8 run, taking its largest lead of the game at 68-54, with 3:49 to play. Anglin then made five straight free throws and Caden Powell made two, as the Owls cut the deficit in half with 2:19 to play. But that's as close as they would get, as Tulane made 12-of-14 free throws to close the game.
What Head Coach Rob Lanier Had to Say
"We're coming off a game that we thought we let get away, and we're playing a good team that's playing well. The controllable areas of the game, we weren't very good at. For a team that's looking for confidence, the only way to find it is to do what you practice every day, and rely on your principles. We didn't have that in the second half with some key guys. (Tulane) is a really good team offensively, and 46 points in the paint is a lot. I'm disappointed. But, we'll get back to work and find a way to get it right."
The Stats
Rice was held to 28.1% (18-of-64) from the field, and 25.6% (10-of-39) from three. Tulane shot 51.8% (29-of-56) from the floor, and 77.8% (21-of-27) from the free throw line, but was just 3-of-14 (21.4%) from three. Rice won the rebounding battle, 44-to-40, and scored 46 points in the paint.
