
Rice Falls in Overtime at UAB

BIRMINGHAM – The Rice women's basketball team fell on the road in a 63-56 overtime loss to UAB Wednesday night at Bartow Arena. The Owls fall to 10-9 (3-4 AAC), while UAB moves to 13-7 (4-4 AAC).
Malia Fisher led all scorers with 24 points while adding six rebounds, three steals and two blocks. Dominique Ennis added 15 points, six rebounds, two assists and one steal.
As a team, Rice shot 22-of-77 (28.6%) from the floor and 6-of-26 (23.1%) from three-point range. The Owls were 6-of-9 (66.7%) from the free throw line.
HOW IT HAPPENED
First Quarter
Hailey Adams opened the game's scoring as the two sides traded scores early. Trailing by two, Fisher drilled a three-pointer to give Rice a one-point advantage. With Rice down 9-5, an Ennis three followed by Fisher's layup gave the Owls a 10-9 lead at the end of the quarter.
Second Quarter
A 7-1 UAB run opened the second quarter, with Aniah Alexis' layup snapping the Rice drought. Back-to-back Fisher and Ennis scores brought the Owls within two, but the Blazers went on another quick run to take a 24-17 lead at the half.
Third Quarter
Fisher got the scoring started in the third, with UAB finding a quick answer to keep its seven-point lead. Jill Twiehaus later sank a triple, with Ennis' jumper later bringing the Owls within four. Down by two, Fisher hit another three-pointer as the Owls regained the lead at 31-30. With the game tied, Fisher's and-one conversion gave Rice a three-point lead. UAB took a 39-38 lead in the closing seconds, but Ennis drilled a three before the horn as Rice led 41-39 at the end of the quarter.
Fourth Quarter
UAB took a two-point lead to open the fourth before Fisher was able to tie the game back up. With the game still tied, Ennis hit her third three-pointer of the game to take back the lead. After the Blazers regained the lead, Fisher tied things back up and Ennis later gave the lead back to the Owls with 2:26 left. Tied once again, the Owls had the final possession but couldn't get a shot off as the two went into overtime tied 50-50.
Overtime
After several defensive stops on both ends, Victoria Flores got the first basket of overtime to give the lead to Rice. UAB quickly responded with a three to open a 9-0 Blazer run before Fisher got the Owls back on the board. Time limited a Rice comeback as the Blazers won 63-56.
Quick Notes
Fisher set a season-high with 24 points and three steals.
Flores had a career-high 11 rebounds.
She also tied a career-high with four steals and one block.
Trinity Gooden tied a season-high with four assists.
