
Rice Shuts Down Prairie View A&M in Doubleheader

HOUSTON - Rice earned two victories over Prairie View A&M during a doubleheader against the Panthers on Saturday at the George R. Brown Tennis Center, winning match one 7-0, while taking the second match 4-0.
MATCH ONE (7-0 RICE)
Rice (2-0) made quick work of the Panthers (0-3) in the doubles portion of the first match, starting with Eduardo Morais and Yair Sarouk's victory at court two by a score of 6-2. Petro Kuzmenok and Joshua Mandelbaum clinched the doubles point at court 3 with a final score of 6-4. The 43rd-ranked duo of Arthus de la Bassetiere and Kabeer Kapasi needed a little extra time to take care of their opponents, but pulled out a 7-5 victory at court one to sweep through the doubles.
Singles saw the Owls take all six matches in straight-sets, with Emir Sendogan being the first to finish at court three by a score of 6-1, 6-0. Mandelbaum followed that up with his first singles win at Rice at court six with a score of 6-3, 6-1. Sarouk was the clinching point for Rice, solidifying Rice's victory with a 6-2, 6-0 win at court four. The match continued, with Gabriel Porras earning a 6-2, 6-2 victory in his first collegiate appearance at court five. Finally, de la Bassetiere and Kapasi rounded out the victory with the final two points, finishing with 6-3, 6-3, and 7-5, 6-2 decisions, respectively.
MATCH TWO (4-0 RICE)
Rice's (3-0) Kuzmenok and Porras got off to a quick start in the double's portion of the second match, dominating Gans and Nunez Prado from PVAMU (0-4) and taking the first doubles match 6-0. Kapasi and Sarouk followed that up with a 6-2 victory over Boswell and Bunch to clinch the doubles point. Mandelbaum and Morais were down 3-4 to Isa and Peter-Gooding before the doubles portion was called off.
Mandelbaum earned the first singles victory of the second match with a quick 6-2, 6-0 victory over Boone, setting Rice up with a 2-0 lead. Morais took down Bunch by a score of 6-0, 6-2, to claim a 3-0 lead for Rice, and Kuzmenok had his first clinching moment of the season, taking down Nunez Prado 6-1, 6-0, to clinch the match for Rice., ending the day with a perfect 3-0 record for the Owls.
Sendogan, Sarouk, and Porras all had the advantage when the match was called off. Sendogan was up 6-3, 3-0 at court one, Sarouk was up 6-0, 5-2 at court four, and Porras won his first set 6-1, but trailed 2-4 in the second set.
Rice will be back in action on Saturday, January 25, in the ITA Kickoff Weekend against top-ranked Texas.
