
Rice Drops Road Contest at North Texas

DENTON – The Rice women's basketball team fell on the road to North Texas 61-53 Wednesday night at the Super Pit in Denton, Texas. Rice falls to 9-8 (2-3 AAC), while the Mean Green improve to 13-5 (5-1 AAC).
Malia Fisher led the Owls with her first double-double of the season with 14 points and 11 rebounds while adding two assists and two steals.
As a team, Rice shot 22-of-58 (37.9%) from the field and 3-of-15 (20%) from three-point range. The Owls were 6-of-9 (66.7%) from the free throw line.
HOW IT HAPPENED
First Quarter
Hailey Adams opened the game's scoring, with Fisher following with a three-pointer. After Sussy Ngulefac's layup gave Rice an early seven-point lead, North Texas responded with an 11-0 run to take the lead. Back-to-back scores from Aniah Alexis and Shelby Hayes later tied the game. Down two, Shelby Hayes' and-one conversion gave Rice a one-point lead at 14-13 at the end of the first.
Second Quarter
Fisher got the second quarter rolling with another three-pointer, with UNT later countering with its own three. Alexis responded quickly with her own triple, with Flores later pushing the lead to six points with a pair of free throws. Leading 22-18, back-to-back scores by Adams, followed by a Trinity Gooden baseline jumper, gave Rice a 10-point advantage. The Owls led 28-20 at halftime.
Third Quarter
Flores had a pair of buckets to open the third before the Mean Green responded to cut the deficit to single digits. After scores from Fisher and Ngulefac gave Rice a 38-26 lead, UNT embarked on an 11-0 run to make it a one-point game. Fisher ended the scoreless drought with a layup, but the Mean Green retook the lead and led 44-40 at the end of the third.
Fourth Quarter
Jill Twiehaus' jumper in the paint brought the Owls within two as the two sides traded scorers early in the fourth. Down by five, Adams and Flores brought Rice within two, with Gooden later tying the game with a jumper in the final second of the shot clock. Down five once again, Hayes got a second-chance basket to fall, bringing the Owls deficit to 52-49. The Owls wouldn't be able to get any closer, as the Mean Green went on to win 61-53.

She has now recorded 10-plus rebounds in back-to-back games.
