HOUSTON – The Rice women's basketball team's quest to defend their American Athletic Conference title began today as the Owls opened the 2024-25 season with the team's first official practice Monday afternoon in Autry Court.
Shelley Pennington and Friends Head Coach Lindsay Edmonds enters her fourth season with the Owls and looks to continue to build on an already incredible resume at Rice.
"The first day you're setting the tone," Edmonds said. "Setting the tone of who you're going to be as a team. Setting the tone for what your energy is going to be, what your execution is going to be, what your effort is going to be. [Also] how intense you're going to be, how together are we going to be. I thought we did that today and I thought we did a great job of being who we wanted to be. It's day one, and it's really easy to do on day one because everyone is excited, but now we got to keep stacking days and bounce back tomorrow and do the same exact thing."
The Owls are coming off a historic 2023-24 season, highlighted by being crowned champions of the AAC in the team's debut season, the first-ever AAC title for Rice Athletics. Rice secured its fourth trip to the NCAA Tournament in program history and its first trip since 2019.
Lots of familiar faces return for the Owls, including All-AAC Third Team selection and AAC All-Tournament MVP Malia Fisher. Fisher led the Owls with 13.1 points and 6.9 rebounds per game. Another All-Tournament honoree, Sussy Ngulefac, returns and is coming off a season where she set the school record in field goal percentage at 69.7% from the floor.
Rice will also see several hot hands from behind the arc returning with Dominique Ennis, Emily Klaczek and Maya Bokunewicz. The three were the Owls' top three-point shooters in threes per game and in three-point field goal percentage last season.
The Owls will open the 2024-25 season on Nov. 4 at Tudor Fieldhouse against South Dakota State.
Season tickets are $80 for general admission and can be purchased by calling 713-348-OWLS (6957) or by clicking here. Single-game tickets will be released at a later time.
