Women's Tennis Notches Seven Wins Saturday at H-E-B Invitational

WACO, Texas - The Rice Owls women's tennis team continued competition in in the H-E-B Invitational in Waco, Texas, earning two doubles victories and five singles victories on Saturday.
The doubles competition saw Nithesa Selcaraj and Saara Orav take down a duo from Colorado, 6-2, to earn the first victory of the day for the Owls. Darya Schwartzman and Fernanda Martinez then took down a duo from Illinois with a final score of 8-7 (7-4) to notch the second doubles victory of the day for the Owls. Divna Ratkovic and Valentina Ponce pushes their match to 8-4, but fell short against a pair from Houston.
In singles competition, Ratkovic earned the Owls' first singles victory of the day due to a withdrawal from her opponent. Ponce then took a three set victory (6-2, 3-6, 1-0 (10-4)) from her opponent from Baylor to mark the second singles win for Rice. Martinez dominated her opponent from Houston by a final scoreline of 6-1, 6-2, then Schwartzman took a three-set victory from her opposition from UTSA to take the fourth singles win of the day, 6-4, 4-6, 1-0 (10-7). Ratkovic notched her second singles victory of the day with a win over her opponent from Nebraska, 6-4, 7-6 (7-2). Ashar (3-6, 1-6) and Selvaraj (5-7, 4-6) fell short against their opponents, both from UTSA.
The Owls will wrap up its time in the H-E-B Invitational on Sunday, September 22.
