Rice drops opener 34-14
Sam Houston jumped out to a 17-0 lead in the first quarter and held the ball for over 20 minutes in the second half to thwart hopes of a Rice comeback, and the Bearkats took a 34-14 decision at Rice Stadium on Saturday night.
The Story
After a series of three punts to open the game, Sam Houston jumped out to a 14-0 lead in the span of four plays. On the first play of the Bearkats' second series, quarterback Hunter Watson connected on a 67-yard scoring pass to John Gentry to open the scoring. Two plays later, David Fisher stepped in front of an E.J. Warner pass in the flat and returned it 30 yards for a score. Sam Houston added a 52-yard field goal on its next possession to extend the lead to 17-0.
A 20-yard punt return by Sean Fresch set up Rice at midfield early in the second quarter and Warner needed just five plays to guide the Owls to their first touchdown of the season. He hit Matt Sykes (10 yards) and Dean Connors (11 yards) to move the ball to the Sam Houston 25, and following a three-yard run by Taji Atkins, Warner stood in the pocket to allow Kobie Campbell to come open, then hit him for a 22-yard touchdown.
The Bearkats went back in front by 17 with a touchdown later in the quarter and then extended the lead to 31-7 before Warner engineered his second scoring drive of the night, guiding the Owls 65 yards in seven plays, with Connors dashing the final 15 for his first touchdown of the year.
