HOUSTON – After the Owls surrendered an early goal, Rice rallied quickly to defeat Lamar 2-1 Thursday night at Holloway Field. With the win, Rice moves to 4-1 on the season, including a 4-0 home mark.
How It Happened
The Rice defense was put to test early, with Faith Hutchins making a save in the opening minute of the match. The Lamar offense went quiet until the 14th minute when the Cardinals scored the first goal of the match. Natalie Gorji and Carsyn Martz looked to tie the match in the following minutes, but the Cardinal goalie was there to make the saves. Kallie McKinney found the tying goal in the 21st minute off a pass from Leah Chancey. Nine minutes later, Jules Johnston put the Owls in front after scoring off a ricochet off the crossbar from a Camille Quarterman shot. Rice went into halftime still holding the 2-1 lead. Hutchins and crew would hold down the defense the rest of the way in the second half, as the Owls held on for the win.
Post-Match Reaction: Head Coach Brian Lee
"We're getting stronger now, found things they never found. They might be bigger but we're faster and never scared. There was something in their eyes said we can beat this…it was a good day."
