HOUSTON – Rice men's track and field head coach Jon Warren announced the promotion of Brek Christensen to Associate Head Coach for the men's track and field team Monday afternoon.
"Brek has been a phenomenal asset to Rice track and field for over 10 years now," Warren said. "This is a small way to acknowledge what he's done for the program and the school."
Christensen enters his 11th season with the Rice track and field program, where he has elevated the Rice throwers to national contenders. During the 2018-19 season, Christensen began coaching both the men's and women's throwers.
Since Christensen has been on the Rice staff, his throwers have set six school records, won 32 conference individual championships, qualified 42 athletes to the NCAA West Preliminary Round, and earned 20 NCAA All-American honors at the NCAA Championships.
The 2024 season was a historic one for the Rice throwers, where Christensen's group collected seven AAC event titles from the indoor and outdoor seasons. Five throwers qualified for the NCAA West Prelims, with four advancing to the NCAA Championships.
At the championship, on her final throws with a Rice uniform, Tara Simpson-Sullivan broke her own school record and the AAC record to finish second in the nation in the hammer throw. Mckyla Van der Westhuizen followed that performance with a third-place finish in the javelin, also on a personal best throw. Ty Hampton earned Second Team All-American honors with a 14th-place finish in the javelin, while Shaun Kerry earned Honorable Mention All-American honors, finishing 19th in the hammer throw.
Rice's 14 points at the NCAA Championships from Simpson-Sullivan and Van der Westhuizen secured a top 25 finish in the nation, as the Owls finished the meet in 21st. Simpson-Sullivan finished her career with eight conference titles and seven All-American honors. After an incredible 2024 season, Christensen was named the 2024 USTFCCCA South Central Assistant Coach of the Year.
