FAYETTEVILLE – The Rice men's track and field team saw two athletes qualify for next week's NCAA Championships while also boasting several other strong performances during the opening day of the NCAA West Prelims in Fayetteville, Arkansas.
In what ended up being the first event of the meet due to weather, Ty Hampton punched his ticket to the NCAA Championships in Eugene, Oregon, after finishing 11th in the javelin.
The hammer throw was the originally scheduled opening event of the meet, but it ended up closing night one in dramatic fashion. After leading all athletes through the first two flights, Shaun Kerry clinched a spot in the NCAA Championships on the final throws of the night, finishing 12th in the event.
Cal Abdulky took 21st in the hammer throw behind a strong final throw.
Aryan Padaruth finished 35th in the javelin to close his incredible freshman season.
Over in the pole vault, Matt Kumar closed his season by taking 21st with a clearance of 5.22m.
Day One Reaction - Head Coach Jon Warren
"Wow. Talk about two nerve-wracking finishes for Ty and Shaun, but fortunately, they were rewarded with a trip to the NCAA Championship meet. Both the javelin and hammer throw were tightly contested and were inches away from changing the outcome of both events. Starting off the prelims with two advancing to the championship is a terrific start and we look forward to hopefully sending more on Friday."
