IRVING – After setting an 11-second personal best this weekend at the 20th annual J. Fred Duckett Twilight Meet, Gus Gannon was named the AAC Men's Track Athlete of the Week, the conference announced this afternoon.
"That was a great effort by Gus," said men's track and field head coach Jon Warren. "He was about one second off Alfredo Gomez's school record and the cool part was that Alfredo was there to see it. Excellent race!"
Gannon ran a time of 8:47.12 in the 3000m Steeplechase, 11 seconds faster than his previous personal best set last month. The mark ranks him second all-time at Rice in the event, while also ranking him first in the AAC and 18th in the NCAA West region.
The Owls are off this week but will be back in action next weekend at the University of Houston's Tom Tellez Invite.
