Huntsville: Sam Houston made the most of four singles, scoring six times in the middle three innings to take a 6-2 win over Rice and end the Owls' five-game winning streak in the series on Tuesday night.
The Details: Rice starter Robert Fernandez breezed through the hot-hitting Bearkat lineup, retiring the first 11 in a row after his teammates gave him a 1-0 lead in the top of the first. Kyte McDonald led off the game with a single and Jack Riedel followed with a walk. They moved up 90 feet on a sacrifice bunt and McDonald came home on a ground out by Nathan Becker. Sam Houston tied it in the bottom of the fourth without the benefit of a hit. Fernandez allowed a two-out walk to Malachi Lott, who advanced to second on a stolen base. Fernandez struck out David Jeffery but he reached first when the strike was dropped and advanced to second on a wild throw to first that also allowed Lott to tie the game. The Bearkats took the lead with a pair of unearned runs in the fifth and added three in the sixth. Rice ended the scoring on an RBI single by Brendan Cumming in the ninth.
Up Next: With the upcoming Easter weekend, the Owls head to north tomorrow to open their first AAC road series at Wichita State. The series opens at 6 p.m. Thursday night, followed by an 11 a.m. Kids Day game on Friday and a noon finale on Saturday.
