Owls Drop AAC Opener to Tulane

Game two at 2 p.m. on Saturday
The Details: Rice jumped out to a 4-0 lead after five innings thanks to the exploits of Treyton Rank, who doubled home the first two runs of the night in the third inning and then added two more with a triple in the bottom of the fifth. Starter Parker Smith held Tulane off the board until the sixth when the Green Wave cut the margin to 4-2. They tied it in the seventh and then took the lead in the eighth but Rice rallied to tie it with two outs in the inning. Manny Garza singled to center and Tobias Motley battled back from an 0-2 count for a walk. Pierce Gallo followed with a walk to load the bases for pinch hitter Jacob Devenny who appeared to have struck out on a foul tip but Tulane catcher Collin Tuft could not hold to the ball. Given new life, Devenny ripped the next pitch to center for a single to score Garza and Motley to tie the game. Garrett Stratton held the Green Wave scoreless the next two innings before they struck for eight runs on six hits in the 11th.
Up Next: The teams return to Reckling Park for the middle game of the series at 2 p.m. on Saturday.

- Rice fell to 8-14, 5-9 at home, 30-9 vs. Tulane, and 0-1 as members of the AAC.
- The game was the first in the 39-game series to go into extra innings and Tulane's 14 runs were they most it has scored vs. Rice.
- Rank singled in the first to extend his hitting streak to eight games and his four RBI matched his career high.
- Stratton worked a career-high 2.1 innings and struck out a career-best four.
