Cougars Take Silver Glove Game One
3/19/2024 9:38:00 PM | Baseball
Game two at Reckling, 6:30 Wednesday
Schroeder Park: Houston struck for three runs in the second inning and made those runs stand up by holding Rice to two hits in a 4-1 win in the opening game of the 2024 Silver Glove series on Tuesday night.
The Details: Rice starter Robert Fernandez worked a career-high five innings in his fourth start of the year and allowed only two base runners outside of the second when the Cougars touched him for three runs. With one out, Houston loaded the bases and plated the first run of the game and then added two more on a triple that ended with the third Cougar attempting to score thrown out at the plate on a relay throw by Ben Royo. Fernandez then struck out the last batter of the inning and retired nine of his next 11. Nathan Becker collected the game's first hit with a single in the second, but Owls did not collect another hit until Treyton Rank's eighth-inning single to drive in Kyte McDonald who had walked and stole his second base of the night.
Up Next: The Silver Glove Series moves to the other side of 288 on Wednesday as the teams meet at 6:30 at Reckling Park. The series finale will be back at Schroeder Park on April 2.
