Three-run rally falls short
Honolulu, O'ahu: Kyte McDonald capped a three-run Rice rally with a two-out homer in the eighth, but Hawai'i answered with a run of its own to take a 4-3 decision on Saturday night at Les Murakami Stadium.
The Details: Rainbow Warrior starter Randy Abshier retired 16 of the first 17 Owls while Rice starter J.D. McCracken stranded five runners in the first three innings before Hawai'i broke out on top with three runs in the fourth. The 'Bows put the first two on base with a ball leaving the infield and then used another bunt single to score the first run. A passed ball allowed the second run and then a double pushed home the third run. Rice broke through for a run in the sixth on back-to-back doubles by Trey Duffield and Jack Riedel, who extended his hitting streak to seven games with a shot in the gap to score Duffield. In the eighth Hawai'i closer Itsuki Takemoto retired the first two Owls, but Trey Duffield singled and Kyte McDonald followed with a line-drive that cleared the left field wall to tie the game. Hawai'i answered back with a solo homer in the bottom of the eighth to snap the Owls' seven-game winning streak in the series.
Up Next: Game Three of the series is set for 6:05 on Sunday
