3/1/2024 10:46:00 PM | Baseball
Game two set for 4:30 on Saturday
Reckling Park: Stanford struck for three early runs and starter Matt Scott held Rice hitless for six innings as Stanford defeated Rice 6-2 in the first game of a three-game series at Reckling Park on Friday night.
The Details: The Cardinal touched Rice starter for a solo homer in the first, only the second run the Owls have allowed in the first inning this year, and added two in the second before Smith settled into a groove in the third and fourth innings. They added one in the fifth and an unearned run in the sixth. Scott walked the Owls' second hitter of the game (Kyte McDonald) and then retired 13 straight before Ben Dukes worked the first of three walks on the night in the fifth. Rice finally broke through against Scott in the sixth when Jack Riedel hit an opposite-field homer, his fourth of the season. After being held to two base runners in the first six innings, Rice put 10 on base over the final three, loading the bases in the seventh and eighth. Nathan Becker's sacrifice fly drove home Treyton Rank in the eighth to close out the scoring for the Owls.
Up Next: The teams meet in the middle game of the season-opening series on Saturday at a special 4:30 start time to avoid conflicting with women's basketball's Senior Day vs. North Texas. J.D. McCracken slated to throw for Rice and face Cardinal lefthander Christian Lim.
