Fourth Quarter Struggles Hurts Rice at Florida Atlantic

BOCA RATON – The Rice women's basketball team dropped a 68-63 road contest to Florida Atlantic on Saturday afternoon. The Owls fall to 12-9 (6-4 AAC) on the season.
Destiny Jackon led the Owls with 16 points, four rebounds and an assist, while Dominique Ennis finished with 13 points, seven rebounds and two assists.
As a team, Rice shot 23-of-49 (46.9%) from the floor and 4-of-14 (28.6%) from three-point range.
HOW IT HAPPENED
First Quarter
Fatou Samb opened the scoring with Ennis following with a three-pointer as Rice took an early lead. After Jackson's layup gave Rice a six-point lead, Florida Atlantic battled back to tie the game. Rice led 14-10 at the end of the first quarter.
Second Quarter
Sussy Ngulefac's and-one conversion, followed by Kennedy Clifton's jumper, gave Rice a nine-point lead to open the second quarter. After Florida Atlantic cut the deficit to four, Trinity Gooden extended the lead to six. Leading by two, Maya Bokunewicz drilled a three-pointer, but the home Owls responded with a run to tie the game. With Rice trailing by two, Jazzy Owens-Barnett converted an old-fashioned three-point play to give Rice a 30-29 lead at halftime.
Third Quarter
After Florida Atlantic took a one-point lead to open the third, Ennis hit a three-pointer to kickstart a 10-0 run for Rice, featuring scores from Gooden, Jackson and another Ennis triple, to take a 41-33 lead. Following a Florida Atlantic score, Ngulefac, Jackson and Ennis connected on three-straight layups to put Rice up 12 points. Hailey Adams closed the quarter with a two-point jumper from the corner as Rice led 49-38.
Fourth Quarter
Florida Atlantic cut the deficit to three before a pair of Jackson free throws extended the Rice lead to five. Leading by two, Bokunewicz extended the lead up to four, but another run for the home team gave Florida Atlantic a 55-53 lead with 4:11 left. After Rice took a 57-56 lead, Florida Atlantic took the lead right back before Jackson tied the game with 49 seconds left. Florida Atlantic would pull away at the free throw line, winning 68-63.
