Riedel homers in back-to-back games
The Details: Rice jumped out to the early lead for the third consecutive game, taking a 2-0 lead in the first on Pierce Gallo's two-run homer. A sacrifice fly by Treyton Rank in the second extended the lead to 3-0 and after Notre Dame used a pair of solo homers in the third to close the gap to one run, Manny Garza drove Nathan Becker home with a single in the bottom of the third to push the margin back to two, 4-2. The Irish again drew within one with a single run in the top of the sixth, but Jack Riedel gave Rice its largest lead of the day with a three-run homer in the bottom of the sixth, his second homer in as many games. But Notre Dame erased that advantage with five runs in the seventh. Rice struck back for solo run in the eighth on a sacrifice fly by Becker only to see the Irish tack on five more runs in the ninth. Kyte McDonald's two-run homer, his first as an Owl, drew the Owls to within three for the final margin.
Up Next: Rice closes the initial four-game homestand to open the 2024 season by hosting Sam Houston (2-1) on Tuesday at 6:30. The Bearkats took two of three over Oklahoma State this weekend at home.
Notes:
- Rice fell to 1-4 all-time vs. Notre Dame, 1-3 at Reckling Park.
- The Owls have scored in the first inning in all three games, including scoring twice in each of the last two.
- Riedel homered in back-to-back games for the second time in his career (4/8-9/22 at LA Tech) and his two homers this weekend give him 13 in his career, nine of them at Reckling Park.
- He has hit in each of the first three games of the season and has back-to-back, multi-RBI games.
- Becker tied his career high with three hits (seventh time) along with a walk and a sacrifice fly in five plate appearances.
- Kyte McDonald collected his first two hits as an Owl and added his first stolen base.
- Gallo's homer was his first in 101 at-bats (4/7/23 vs. LA Tech).
- Ben Dukes has also hit in the first three games and tied his career-high with two runs scored.
- Sophomore transfer Jackson Mayo opened on the mound for the Owls in his Rice debut and worked out of a bases-loaded jam with no one out in his first frame. He did not allow a hit in his two innings (2,0,0,0,5,2).
- Mauricio Rodriguez struck out a career-high five and matched his career-long effort with four innings of relief (4,4,3,3,2,5).
