MIAMI, Fla. - Ella Dyson finished as the individual champion of the CSCAA College National Open Water Championship for the second time, leading Rice to its second-straight team championship on Sunday afternoon at Biscayne Bay.
"Wow! Ella jumped out in the lead and just kept getting farther and farther away from the field," said head coach Seth Huston. "It was an Incredible performance."
Dyson finished in first place with a time of 1:03:31.40, over three minutes faster than the second place finisher.
"I had lots of fun racing in some tough, windy conditions!" said Dyson. "I had a good start and found a comfortable rhythm which helped me to grow my lead and finish strong."
Additionally, Rice swimmers Ava Hamblett (1:07:04.17), Amelia Kane (1:07:06.71), and Ava Portello (1:07:08.73) all finished in order at fifth, sixth, and seventh. The Open Water Championship is scored like a cross country meet, where the lowest score wins. Scores are tabulated by the top three per team cumulative time.
"Ava Hamblett, Amelia Kane and Ava Portello really had great swims. They were all patient and moved up in the field as the race went on securing 5-6-7 finishes among 120+ competitors. Definitely a team victory today."
Rice was the only squad in the women's competition to have all of its athletes finish in the top eight.
Rice's swimmers and divers will now rest until January.
