HOUSTON, Texas – Denver Anglin's jumper with 1:48 remaining gave Rice the lead for good and capped off an 11-point comeback as Rice defeated Houston Christian Friday night, 61-58, at Sharp Gym.
The Story
Rice struggled to begin the game, turning the ball over six times in the first six minutes as HCU grabbed a 14-6 lead. The Owls scored seven of the next nine points before a Huskies basket. But an Anglin three-pointer followed by a layup from Trae Broadnax tied the game at 16. Houston Christian scored five straight, but a jumper from Alem Huseinovic sent Rice on an 11-3 run to take its largest lead of the half, 27-24, 2ith 3:58 to play. HCU retook the lead. However, Kellen Amos' layup with 51 seconds left sent the teams into halftime tied at 29.
The Owls took a 33-31 lead early in the second half. However, they missed five of their next six shots while turning the ball over four times as HCU went on a 16-3 run to take its largest lead of the game at 47-36 with 12:26 remaining. But Rice began to chip away at the deficit. Back-to-back baskets from Caden Powell and Broadnax brought it to within single digits. The teams traded free throws before a three from Aaron Powell pulled the Owls within four. The Huskies pushed their lead back to six on a pair of free throws, but Rice scored nine of the next 12 points to tie the game at 55 with 5:30 to play. Ivan Reynolds gave HCU the lead on a pair of free throws, but Rice regained the advantage on jumpers from Amos and Anglin with 1:48 left. Elijah Brooks made one-of-two free throws before Amos made a pair. Houston Christian had one last chance to tie the game, but Bryson Dawkins' long three-point attempt was off the mark, clinching the victory for the Owls.
