
Rice Drops Heartbreaker in Overtime to Hofstra in Nassau Championship

NASSAU, Bahamas – A game that saw 10 ties and 11 lead changes went to overtime on Trae Broadnax's jumper, but Rice couldn't complete the comeback, falling to Hofstra, 68-63, in the opening game of the Nassau Championship.
The Story
Rice came out and hit its first two shots. But with the game tied at six, the Owls missed seven of their next eight shots as Hofstra went on a 12-3 run to take its largest lead of the game at 18-9. After trading three-pointers, Rice went on a 9-2 run, capped by an Alem Huseinovic three that brought the Owls within 23-21 with 5:58 to play in the half. After layups from both teams, the Pride made back-to-back baskets. Emory Lanier hit a three, and Jaquan Sanders made a jumper. Lanier then made two free throws to send Rice into halftime trailing, 31-28.
Denver Anglin opened the second half with two free throws, and Huseinovic and Trae Broadnax hit consecutive threes as the Owls scored eight straight to begin the half and take a 36-31 lead. But, Hofstra answered with a 10-2 run. After trading baskets, Broadnax hit an acrobatic jumper, was fouled, and converted the three-point play to tie the game at 43. After going back-and-forth, Broadnax made two free throws and Andrew Akuchie's jumper gave the Owls a 50-48 advantage with 7:04 to play. Hofstra tied the game with a layup and took the lead on a pair of free throws. Baskets by Akuchie and Kellen Amos gave Rice the lead, but four straight points gave the Pride the lead with 41 seconds to play. After Amos missed the front end of a one-and-one, the Owls got a stop and Amos went the length of the court hitting a layup with eight seconds left to send the game to overtime.
Both teams began overtime with layups. After Cruz Davis hit two free throws, Jacob Dar's second three of the game gave Rice a 61-60 lead. Davis converted a three-point play, and Amos made two free throws to tie the game at 63 with remaining. Davis made a layup and Amos missed his chance to tie. Rice was forced to foul, and Khalil Farmer made three-of-four free throws to ice the game for the Pride.

Rice connected on 33.9% (21-of-62) from the field and 38.1% (8-of-21) from three. Hofstra was held to 38.1% (24-of-63) from the floor and 18.5% (5-of-27) from three. The Pride won the rebounding battle, 46-to-42.

• This was first-ever meeting between Rice and Hofstra.
• Rice held Hofstra to just 18.5% from three. It's the second straight game holding its opponents under 20.0% from three, and the third time this year.
• Trae Broadnax led Rice with 16 points, his seventh straight double-figure scoring game, and had five rebounds.
• Kellen Amos scored 13 points, grabbed six rebounds, and had a game-high five assists.
• Caden Powell pulled down a team-high seven rebounds.
• Jacob Dar had season-highs of eight points and six rebounds, and hit his first two three-pointers of the season.
