
Rice Rides Defense to 75-67 Victory over Arkansas State at Nassau Championship

NASSAU, Bahamas – The Rice men's basketball team held Arkansas State to just 35.1% shooting and 11.5% from three, and got timely scoring to defeat the Red Wolves, 75-67, in the second game of the Nassau Championship.
The Story
Arkansas State made the first two baskets of the game. Kellen Amos then scored four straight points. ASU scored six of the next eight points, but Jimmy Oladokun, Jr., made two free throws and Denver Anglin hit a jumper to tie the game at 10. An 8-2 run gave the Red Wolves their largest lead of the half at 18-12. After Trae Broadnax made a jumper, the Owls missed their next six shots. However, they made 10-of-13 free throws to keep them in the game before Broadnax hit a jumper to pull within 27-26 with 3:40 to play. Arkansas State made two free throws. Alem Huseinovic then hit a three-pointer, and Broadnax made two free throws to give Rice its first lead of the game, 31-29. A layup tied the game, but Jacob Dar hit a three from the corner before Izaiyah Nelson's layup at the buzzer sent Rice into half with a 34-33 lead.
Rice made just one of its first nine shots in the second half as Arkansas State began with a 15-5 run to take its largest lead of the game at 46-39. But the Owls caught fire, making five straight shots in a 14-2 run, taking a 53-48 lead midway through the second half. After ASU made four straight free throws to cut the deficit to one, the teams went back-and-forth over the next 2:44. Rice scored eight of the next nine points. A layup by Terrance Ford, Jr., cut the lead to seven. But Rice made seven of 10 free throws in the final 1:25 to close out the game.

Rice connected on 37.3% (19-of-51) from the field, 33.3% (5-of-15) from three, and 82.1% (32-of-39) from the free throw line. Arkansas State was held to 35.1% (20-of-57) from the floor and 11.5% (3-of-26) from three. Rice outrebounded ASU, 40-to-39.
