Series Notes
Matt Sykes' go-ahead 18-yard touchdown with four seconds remaining on Saturday was the first time the Owls had come from four or more points behind in the last minute of a game since 2006 when Rice rallied to defeat UAB 33-32 at Rice Stadium as Chase Clement connected with Jarett Dillard on an 18-yard score with three seconds left. Since then, the Owls have had two games in which they broke ties with touchdowns to win with less than a minute remaining. J.T. McMahon hit Bradley Rozner with a 22-yard TD pass vs. UTEP in 2022 with 25 seconds left to break a 30-30 tie and in 2015 Driphus Jackson connected with Zach Wright on a 12-yard TD with 23 seconds left to defeat Army West Point. The Owls have also won three games in regulation by virtue of a field goal when trailing by two points or less during this same period (Clark Fangmeier 40 yards vs. ECU with :03 left in 2006, Fangmeier 31 yards at SMU as time expired in 2007, Chris Boswell 45 yards at Kansas as time expired in 2012).
Long Distance Dean
Dean Connors' 69-yard TD reception vs. UTSA was the longest reception of the year by an Owl and combined with his 71-yard touchdown run vs. TSU made him one of three FBS running backs this season with both a rush and reception of at least 65 yards this season joining Caden Durham of LSU (86 rush, 71 reception), and Desmond Ried of Pitt (72 & 72). He had runs of 49 and 51 yards against Charlotte and now has 10 carries of 30 or more yards in 211 career attempts. His run of 51 yards vs. Charlotte was the fourth of 50 yards or more in his career (all in the last 14 games) and the most by an Owl since Quinton Smith had five from 2003-06. He is averaging and is averaging 6.1 yards on the ground in his career, which would rank third in school history. His average of 6.37 last year was sixth-best for a single season.
