E.J. Warner threw for 271 yards, but Rice turned the ball over five times, falling to Tulane, 24-10, Saturday afternoon at Yulman Stadium
The Story
After both teams punted on their first possession, E.J. Warner's pass over the middle was intercepted by Tyler Grubbs at the Rice 46. Tulane then drove 36 yards before settling for a Jacob Barnes 28-yard field goal, the first points Rice allowed in the first quarter since Army West Point, a span of 55:30. The Owls drove 75 yards in just five plays, culminating in a Warner 31-yard touchdown to Elijah Mojarro. On the next possession, Tulane drove to the Rice 35, but turned the ball over on downs when Darian Mensah's fourth down pass fell incomplete. Dean Connors picked up 40 yards on two carries, but fumbled at the Tulane 26 and it was recovered by the Green Wave. Two possessions later, after Rice was forced to punt, Makhi Hughes scored on a 29-yard reception as Rice went into halftime trailing 10-7.
Tulane got the ball to start the second half, and immediately drove to the Rice 27. However, the Owl defense again stepped up, forcing its second turnover on downs. Rice took advantage, driving to the Green Wave 13 before settling for a Tim Horn 35-yard field goal to tie the game. Rice had chance to take the lead in the fourth quarter. But on second down from the Tulane 25, Warner's pass was intercepted at the two-yard line. Tulane took the lead with 8:22 remaining, gaining all 70 yards on the ground before Hughes scored on a one-yard run. Rice again had a chance to score. But on 4th-and-8 from Tulane's 18, Warner's pass to Braylen Walker was broken up. Rice had got the ball back with 1:50 to play from its own 17. However, after Warner hit Connors, Connors fumbled and it was returned for a touchdown.
