PREVIEW: New Season Highlighted by the Return of Rice Diving

Rice brings back diving for the first time since 1991
HOUSTON - Rice swimming and diving will begin its 2024-25 season tomorrow, as the swim team will host the Rice Fall Splash at the Rice Competition Pool, while the Rice diving team will take part in the Houston Diving Invitational hosted by University of Houston.
"Getting up and actually racing is the reason we do what we do," said head coach Seth Huston. "It's exciting to get to do it, especially here [at home]. I think our student-athletes really step up and swim really well with the crowd behind them."
The swim meet will span over two days and see Rice take on the Houston Cougars and the Arkansas Little Rock Trojans. A full schedule for the swim meet can be found at the bottom of this release.
Another interesting wrinkle for the season is that Rice was picked as the co-favorite in the American Athletic Conference preseason poll, but Coach Huston says he does not concern himself with the outside noise.
"That's not what I like to focus on," he said when asked for his thoughts on the poll. "Our team hasn't talked about it. The season is a process, how we learn and how we grow along the way is how I evaluate how we're doing. I've been really happy with our training up to this point, and this weekend is step one of us learning how we're going to race, how we're going to work together, and how we're going to respond to adversity. These are some new things we'll get to see this weekend that we haven't had the opportunity to yet."
Diving will compete in its first event in 33 years beginning on Friday morning, taking part in the Houston Diving Invitational. Aside from Rice, Houston, Arkansas Little Rock, and North Texas will also be competing in the invitational. A full rundown of the invitational's schedule can be found at the bottom of this release.
"I think the addition of the diving element has been really exciting for the whole team," Coach Huston continued. "They [the team] were really excited when we announced it. It's hard to go into a championship meet with one arm tied behind your back. Swimming is tough, but diving has really opened the door for us to compete in every single event. It's exciting to see the future, and hopefully one day I'm carrying their [the diver's] luggage to the championships and be there to support them when they're doing great."
