HOUSTON - Rice swimming wrapped up its season opener at home in the Rice Fall Splash, while diving concluded its first meet in 33 years at the Houston Diving Invitational on Saturday.
Swimming finished second of three teams in the Rice Fall Splash, with Houston finishing in first with 383.5 points. Rice had 286 points to clinch second place, while Arkansas Little Rock brought up the rear with 144.5 points in the meet.
"I was pleased with the team's response to day two of the meet," said head coach Seth Huston. "Our freshmen, Ava (200 free and 1000 free), Reese (200 IM), and Jessica (100 fly and 100 back) really made significant contributions. Getting out of our training mode and competing really highlighted some technical details we need to work on."
Ava Portello claimed Rice's first top finish of the day in the 200 Yard Freestyle, finishing with a time of 1:49.83. In the following event, the 200 Yard IM, Reese Cole claimed a first place finish with a time of 2:06.69, with Mimi Filkin coming in three hundredths of a second behind at 2:06.72.
To round out the action for swimming, Ella Dyson claimed the final first place finish for the Owls in the 1000 Yard Freestyle, finishing with a time of 10:10.60. Portello and Amelia Kane finished in second and third in that event with times of 10:14.49 and 10:18.17, respectively.
In diving action, Rice competed in both platform and event diving in the Houston Diving Invitational, but was only scored on the platform event. Megan Phillip registered a score of 170.85 in the platform, while Rylee Cone tallied a score of 159.30. It was Coyne's first time ever performing in a platform event.
Rice swimming and diving is back in action on November 1st, when the teams host Tulane at the Rice Competition Pool.
