IRVING – Rice junior Gus Gannon was selected as the American Athletic Conference Cross Country Men's Athlete of the Week, the league office announced Tuesday afternoon.
"Gus' race was one where he ran both smart and very hard against a great field on a great course," said head coach Jon Warren. "It was a good weekend for him."
Gannon paced the Owls this past weekend at the Gans Creek Classic in Missouri, finishing in 28th out of the 300-plus runners. He finished with a time of 23:50.6 for his first 8k race of the season.
The Owls finished 16th as a team out of the 37 schools in a highly-competitive field featuring numerous power programs and nationally ranked teams.
In the latest USTFCCCA South Central Region rankings, the Owls entered the polls at No. 10, having been not ranked in the region coming into the meet.
Rice will be back in action on Oct. 18 for the Arturo Barrios Invitational at Texas A&M.
